Roasted Sweet Potatoes Ingredients
To make this recipe, you will need sweet potatoes, butter, maple syrup, cinnamon and salt.
How Do You Make Roasted Sweet Potatoes?
The first step is to peel your sweet potatoes and cut them into uniformly sized pieces. If you prefer, you can leave the skins on your sweet potatoes. I find that sometimes sweet potato skins are tough, so I always remove them before cooking. Toss the potatoes in a mixture of butter, cinnamon, maple syrup and salt, then roast them on a baking sheet to perfection. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Tips For The Perfect Potatoes
- I look for long, thin sweet potatoes because I find that they’re easier to cut into similar sized pieces.
- While I typically make this recipe with orange sweet potatoes such as the garnet or jewel varieties, yellow sweet potatoes will also work. This technique can also be used to roast carrots, butternut squash and pumpkin.
- Serve your yams alongside other main course favorites such as grilled lamb chops, Moroccan chicken, New York strip steak, slow cooker turkey breast or beer can chicken.
- Leftovers will stay fresh in an airtight container for up to 5 days. You can reheat leftovers in a 375 degrees F oven for 10-15 minutes.
Quick Tip
Don’t forget to stir your sweet potatoes halfway through the baking time so that they cook evenly and don’t burn.

Recipe FAQs
For this recipe, you’ll want to keep the heat relatively low because you don’t want the sugars in the maple syrup to burn. Often times vegetables are roasted at high heat, but these sweet potatoes are roasted at 375 degrees so that they get slightly caramelized but don’t blacken.
True yams are grown in Asia and Africa and look very different than what we’re used to seeing labeled as yams here in the United States. You often see bright orange tubers like the ones featured here called yams, but in fact they’re just another variety of sweet potato. In America, you’ll actually see sweet potatoes of many different shapes, sizes and colors at the supermarket, but not true yams.

Roasted Sweet Potato Variations
While this recipe is delicious as-is, you can easily customize the flavors to your tastes.
- Savory: Toss cubed sweet potatoes with olive oil, and herbs and spices such as cumin, black pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, paprika, minced garlic, parsley, thyme or rosemary. Omit the maple syrup.
- Bacon: Place chopped raw bacon on the sheet pan with your potatoes and cut the amount of butter in half. Roast until bacon is crispy.
- Honey: Substitute honey for the maple syrup in this recipe.
- Nuts: Follow the recipe as directed and garnish with chopped candied pecans or candied walnuts.
- Vegetables: Don’t have sweet potatoes on hand? This recipe also works great with carrots or butternut squash. You can also do a combination of veggies by adding something like cauliflower or broccoli.

These roasted sweet potatoes are great alongside smoked tri tip, baked tilapia and Instant Pot short ribs. They also pair perfectly with baked ham for a fabulous holiday meal. Give them a try and watch the rave reviews pour in!

Sweet Potatoes are my favorite and this unique touch of Maple Cinnamon Butter caramelization makes it yummier.
The sweet potatoes were perfectly cooked and the maple butter added such a delicious and indulgent flavor. It was a hit with my family and will definitely be making it again!
These were absolute perfection and I could easily eat just this not add it as a side! The sweet potato is such a great combination with the maple cinnamon butter. Loved it.
Easy to make and fabulous flavors, these roasted sweet potatoes are a perfect side dish for any meal.
Can I make this up ahead of time and freeze them ?
This would not be a great candidate for the freezer as the potatoes will lose their caramelized crispy exterior when frozen. If this is for Thanksgiving I’d recommend trying a sweet potato casserole to freeze such as this one: https://www.dinneratthezoo.com/ruths-chris-sweet-potato-casserole/
Peeling/Cutting Tip
Wash potato
make a slit with knife
Microwave about 2 minutes (not till soft)
Carefully remove as very hot
Peel and cut…..made my life easier!!

This recipe was delicious! Thank you!
This is the only way I like sweet potatoes! My whole family loves these.
This was really delish! Can’t wait to make it again!
I’ve made these a number of times and I love them! I love getting the caramelization on the potatoes. Sometimes I pan fry them instead of roasting them if I have too many things in the oven. That works good, too.
My mouth is watering over these!! Oh my goodness, these look so so delicious
We loved eating sweet potatoes but adding the maple butter is genius AND so flavorful!
Looks healthy and delicious! Thanks for the recipe! Gonna try it this week.
This is the only way my family will eat these. It’s the best way!
These are so good. I make extra maple butter, refrigerate, and put it on toast – and pretty much everything else!
One of my favorite recipes! I put foil on the pan for easy clean up!
I wanted to try a new sweet potato recipe than what I usually make for Thanksgiving and decided to try this recipe. Wow! I had so many compliments from family and even the grandchildren for these potatoes. Cutting the potatoes took the most time, but the rest of the recipe went together quickly. Flavor was fresh, light, sweet without being too much. So simple and quick to make. Weโll be having them again for Christmas dinner. Iโll have to double the recipe this time since last time there were no leftovers. Perfect recipe just as written.
Thank you for such a nice and thoughtful comment, I really appreciate it!
