You can never go wrong serving cheesy appetizers at a gathering. I typically serve a jalapeno cheddar cheese ball, cheesy corn dip, cheese ball bites, pizza dip, beer cheese dip, or this amazingly easy queso dip.
When I go to my local Mexican restaurant, I always have to order the white queso dip. It’s creamy, a little bit spicy, full of flavor and totally addicting to scoop up with a big pile of tortilla chips! I decided I needed to learn how to make white queso dip at home. I was astounded by just how easy it actually is to make. All you need is a few ingredients and you can have hot cheese dip on the table in minutes!

White Queso Dip Ingredients
To make Mexican cheese dip, you’ll need just 3 ingredients: white American cheese, green salsa and half and half. That’s it!!!
How To Make White Queso Dip
Cut your cheese into cubes, then put it in a pan with half and half and salsa verde. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the cheese is melted and a smooth dip forms. You can add toppings such as pico de gallo, or serve it as-is with plenty of chips.
Tips For Queso Dip
- I like to serve my white queso dip with tortilla chips. Other great dipping options are veggies or flour tortillas cut into triangles.
- Queso dip also makes for a great cheese sauce to pair with carne asada fries, chicken tinga, chipotle carnitas, turkey tacos or carne guisada.
- I typically use a mild green salsa in this recipe so that it’s not too spicy for the kids. If you prefer heat, go for a hot salsa! Alternatively, you can add minced pickled jalapeno pepper slices to turn the spice level up.
- While this cheese dip is great on its own, adding a topping of pico de gallo really takes it over the top. You can either purchase pico de gallo or make my homemade pico de gallo.
Quick Tip
You’ll want to purchase a block of white American cheese at your grocery store deli counter. Just ask for a pound of the cheese, not sliced.
Recipe FAQs
Queso cheese dip in America is typically made with American cheese. This type of cheese has a creamy mild flavor, and melts smoothly without separating.
I find that white queso dip is best when piping hot from the skillet. That being said, you can reheat it if needed. Simply microwave in 30 second increments until the dip becomes liquid and you’re ready to go. If you’re planning to add pico de gallo, add it after reheating the dip. If you add the pico de gallo before reheating, the dip may become watery.

What cheese can be subbed for us in Canada, we don’t have white American cheese.

You can use an orange American cheese if it’s available, or else another type of processed cheese that is mild flavored and melts smoothly.

We have been trying ,for a few years, to find a queso that we could make at home that was comparable to what we get in restaurants…..no luck until THIS!!!!!! This is amazing!!!! So thankful I kept searching and testing……finally SUCESS!!!!! This is the one you are looking for….I am a queso snob….I know!!!!!
Excellent. I make this regularly now in large batches and, as stated, just microwave whatever we need for the moment in 30 second increments, stirring in between. I do add cumin to it because we really like cumin. It’s great to have lying around as a quick appetizer or late night snack. Also great with popcorn. Messy but delicious in that case!
