These baked chicken wings are coated in a homemade spice rub, then roasted to crispy perfection. A simple yet satisfying appetizer or meal option that takes just minutes to put together.
In my opinion, you can never go wrong with chicken wings. Whether it’s garlic parmesan wings, lemon pepper wings or buffalo wings, chicken wings are inexpensive, tender and totally delicious. These baked wings feature a BBQ rub that adds tons of flavor.
I love a good crispy chicken wing, but I don’t love all of the hassle and mess that comes along with deep frying wings. These baked chicken wings are perfectly crispy and golden brown, and loaded with plenty of flavor. Perfect for game day!

Baked Chicken Wings Ingredients
To make baked chicken wings you will need chicken wings, BBQ rub, parsley and vegetable oil.
How Do You Make Baked Chicken Wings?
This baked chickens wings recipe starts with raw chicken wings, which you toss in a little vegetable oil. Next, thoroughly coat the wings in spice rub. Place the wings on a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake them at high heat until crispy and golden brown. Add a sprinkling of parsley to taste and enjoy the wings!
Tips For Baked Chicken Wings
- I highly recommend using homemade BBQ rub. It takes just minutes to put together, and can be used in so many different ways. My homemade rub contains salt, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, onion powder, and more! If you don’t have enough time to make your own rub, feel free to use your favorite store bought spice blend.
- To save time, look for “party style” wings which have the wingettes and the drummettes already separated.
- Some recipes call for coating the wings in baking powder before they’re cooked. I find that coating them in oil and seasonings does the trick for getting crisp oven baked chicken wings.
- Always coat the wings with oil before adding the barbecue rub. This helps the rub to stick to the wings and helps to protect the spices from burning in the oven. The oil also helps to create that desired crispy skin.
- You can line the baking sheet or sheet pan with aluminum foil to catch drips and make clean up easier.
- When you cook the wings on a wire rack, you won’t need to let them drain on paper towels. They will be hot and ready to eat out of the oven!
- These wings are best when served immediately. Leftovers will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, and can be reheated in a 400 degree oven until warmed through.
Quick Tip
You can customize the flavor of your wings by using different seasoning blends such as Jamaican jerk seasoning, Creole seasoning, blackened seasoning or taco seasoning.
How to Cut Chicken Wings
You can often find at the store pre-cut chicken wings which are labeled “party wings” or “wingettes and drummettes.” I like to purchase party wings whenever possible. If you buy whole wings, you will want to separate them to make them easier to cook and eat.
The “wingette” is the flat part of the wing that contains two bones. The “drummette” looks like a little drumstick.
You can separate wings at home by bending the wings back at the joint where the less meaty part of the drummette connects to the wingette. Use kitchen shears or a sharp knife to cut through the joint. Similarly, bend the wingette and the tip back at the joint and cut through the joint with kitchen shears or a sharp knife.
Recipe FAQs
The trick to getting crispy chicken wings is to bake them at high heat, and cook them on a rack. Cooking the wings on a rack ensures that the heat will circulate all around the wings, and any liquid released from the wings will drip away so that the wings roast instead of steam.
Chicken wings should be cooked until crispy and golden brown. This will take about 45 minutes in an oven at 400 degrees F. You will want to keep an eye on the wings to make sure the seasoning does not burn or blacken.
You should not cover chicken wings in the oven. Covering the wings will steam them and they won’t get brown and crispy.
This recipe does not call for saucing your wings, but if you wanted to add sauce, you’d brush it on during the last 5 minutes of the baking time, or after the wings come out of the oven. Adding the sauce too early can cause it to burn.

Flavor Variations
This recipe is fantastic as written; however, you can change it to suit your own taste!
- Spicy: Add some extra cayenne pepper to your BBQ rub.
- Butter: Use melted butter instead of oil if you prefer butter. If you use butter cook the wings at 350 degrees F for a few more minutes.
- Italian: Lightly season your wings with Italian seasoning instead of BBQ rub. I recommend using about 2 teaspoons. Make sure to add salt and pepper to taste.
- Cajun: Lightly season your wings with Cajun seasoning.
Chicken Wing Dips
I always love to serve a dip alongside my baked chicken wings for even more flavor. Some of my favorite dipping sauces include buffalo sauce, homemade ranch dressing, blue cheese dressing, homemade bbq sauce or even a flavorful creamy pesto dip. I also like to serve my wings with carrots and celery sticks.
If you want delicious crispy chicken wings straight out of the oven, look no further. This seasoned and savory chicken wings recipe makes an excellent party snack or simple meal.

Delish!
This sounds so delicious! I love how simple this recipe is, will definitely be making it for dinner soon.
Delicious baked wings, it was nice that only 2 tbsp of oil was needed for this recipe. I also made your rub, the mustard powder added some nice flavor.
Baked chicken wings are always in the monthly rotation around here – the whole family loves them, and they are so much easier than deep frying.
Wow! These were so delicious and tasty! Can’t wait to make these again!
Baked chicken wings are the best. We all loved this recipe with BBQ. Can’t wait to make them again.Perfect for football playoffs.
Do you do bbq after they cook or before???
Sara, I swear we are tastebud twins. I love EVERYTHING you post!! Crispy chicken wings. I am starving now as I look at these photos!
These look so delicious, and such great tips too! I don’t think I would’ve known before how to cut chicken wings, and that homemade barbecue rub also looks fantastic!
Made these this afternoon and they were delicious! My family of 6 all loved them. Went out and bought more wings this evening to make another batch later in the week. Thank you!!
Where rub ingredients? I didn’t see them in recipe.
The rub is linked in the recipe, here it is: https://www.dinneratthezoo.com/bbq-rub-recipe/
I came across this wing recipe, and site, sort of by accident. I wasn’t sure what temperature to use with the wings i planned to make with a BBQ sauce. I liked the clarity of your writing, the pictures, and the rub recipe looked intriguing. I’ve made it a few times and it is a big hit in our home. I particularly like the versatility. In fact, the first time i made it, i accidentally grabbed ginger instead of garlic. Fortunately i discovered the mistake before mixing the rub and got most of it out, and the garlic in. Turns out, the ginger was a nice touch! I also add a bit more rub onto each wing before baking. I’ll be trying your cinnamon rolls next. Thank you for your terrific site.
Try charring them on the grill after baking. It’s a big game changer and takes crispy and flavor to a new level
Just out of the oven and sooooo good! Adding to my go to recipes. Left my wings whole.
I was looking for a good wing recipe to serve at a party when I found yours! The trouble is I would need 5 batches and there’s no way the day of the party I will have time to bake 5 batches. Do you think I could make and bake the wings a couple days in advance of when I want to serve them? Do you think I’ll still be able to get them crispy again when I go to re-heat them in the oven?
I think it would probably be fine although they might be a little drier from being cooked a second time!
This recipe was EXCELLENT!!! I made the wings every for the Wisconsin/ Michigan game on Saturday night and everyone raved about these. 🙂 Will definitely make some more rub in advance and use it anytime I want to make wings.
I’ve been looking for a new wing recipe for awhile. My husband has been doing the fried for WAY too long. These wings are delicious. Hard to impress the man i call hubby. His real name is Chicken Hawk! After eating these wings he said “These are so much better than mine. Please show me how you did it!” Add a little blue cheese for doing and you won’t stop eating. Not to mention, they are so easy to cook
Loved the BBQ spice rub recipe. Next time, I will use half the brown sugar and add a little extra cayenne. A little too sweet for my taste but still delicious!
Awesome, thank you very much for the information.
I’ve made these multiple times now. They’re a huge hit in my family! I’ve also used your bbq rub recipe on other meats as well …. YUM!! Thanks for sharing!
The rub was perfect and I can’t wait to try it on other meats!
