These easy garlic knots are smothered in butter, garlic, herbs and parmesan and are baked to golden brown perfection. A quick side dish for any meal!

My family loves Italian inspired appetizer recipes and side dishes like fried ravioli, caponata and these hot and delicious garlic knots. Serve these rolls with a side of marinara for dipping and watch the compliments come in!

When I go to my favorite local pizzeria, I always have to order a serving of garlic knots. Who can resist those buttery little balls of dough, especially with a dipping sauce on the side? Luckily, these tasty bites are SUPER easy to make at home. If you’ve got a can of pizza dough, you can make these garlic rolls that taste like they came from a restaurant.

They’re the perfect side dish to any Italian meal along with other favorites like angel hair pasta, Italian salad and pasta pomodoro.

Garlic Knots Ingredients

To make garlic knots you will need a can of pizza dough, melted butter, garlic powder, dried oregano, parsley and parmesan cheese.

Strips of pizza dough on a sheet pan that are ready to be tied up.

How Do You Make Garlic Knots?

The first step to making garlic knots is to grab a can of pizza dough. Remove the dough from the can and slice the it into strips. Place the strips flat on a sheet pan and then tie each strip into a knot, tucking the ends of the knot underneath as you go. Brush each knot with a mixture of melted butter, garlic, herbs and parmesan cheese. Reserve half of your butter mixture. After a quick trip through the oven, you’ve got golden brown perfection. Add the reserved butter mixture, then serve the rolls up hot with a side of warm marinara for dipping.

Tips For The Perfect Garlic Knots

  • Use a can of pizza dough rather than making your own. Canned pizza dough is easy to use and comes out of the can with the perfect thickness. No rolling pins are required!
  • Have a bowl of warm marinara sauce for dipping. Choose your favorite brand of sauce. I like Newman’s Own and Rao’s marinara sauce. You can warm the sauce with a few seconds in the microwave.
  • You can place a piece of parchment paper on your sheet pan to make clean up easier.
  • You can freeze these knots and serve them up to three months later. To reheat them place them frozen on a sheet pan and warm them in an oven at 350 degrees F for 12 to 15 minutes.

Quick Tip

Use a pizza cutter to slice evenly through the dough. You can also use kitchen shears if you don’t have a pizza cutter.

Garlic Knot Variations

While these knots are delicious, you can change up the flavor to suit your taste.

  • Garlic Lover: If you’re a big garlic fan, you can increase the amount of garlic powder to 3/4 teaspoon or substitute 1 teaspoon of fresh minced garlic.
  • Flaky Knots: You can use biscuit dough instead of pizza dough if you prefer. Simply stretch out the dough into strips and make the knots.
  • Cinnamon: For a cinnamon sugar version, simply mix together 1/3 cup butter, 1/3 cup granulated sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Spread the mixture on the dough strips and then tie the knots together and bake them.

I always keep a can of pizza dough in the fridge for when a garlic knot craving strikes. These little guys even make a great party appetizer!

  4. I want to make these for a gathering after a courthouse wedding. Could I tie them and put in fridge with damp towel til we get home and pop in oven? Or better to make and reheat? Thanks!

  5. This sounds really good and I can tell from your reviewers that I must try this but my granddaughter likes cinnamon twist. Any suggestions on how to use your process with making them with cinnamon and sugar? Thanks so much

    1. You’d want to bake the knots plain with no toppings, then after they come out of the oven roll them warm in melted butter and cinnamon sugar.

Delicious. I used Trader Joes ready-refrigerated pizza dough. I had to cook mine a bit longer ( I made them too big haha) but OH my goodness. Husband (and his best friend) scarfed them up. Will def. make again. Thanks!
