Tips For The Perfect Dish

  • I typically use kielbasa as it’s flavorful and readily available. You can use turkey or beef kielbasa, either will work just fine.
  • Make sure to wash and dry your cabbage before cooking it.
  • You can purchase Cajun seasoning or make your own Cajun seasoning.
  • The great thing about this recipe is that it can easily be doubled or even tripled if you’re feeding a crowd.
  • This dish will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Leftovers can be reheated on the stove or in the microwave.

Quick Tip

Chop the cabbage pieces to about the same size as your sausage slices.

Recipe FAQs

Should you wash cabbage before cooking it?

Yes, you should wash your cabbage before cooking it. Remove the outer leaves and wash the cabbage. Make sure to dry the cabbage before cooking it.

How do you cut a cabbage?

I cut cabbage pieces a little larger than what you’d find in a bag of coleslaw because I like the vegetables to be similar in size to the sausage pieces. Cut the cabbage into quarters, then cut the core out of each quarter. Use a sharp knife and coarsely chop the cabbage into 1 inch pieces to use in the recipe.

How long do you cook cabbage and sausage?

The total cook time for cabbage and sausage is about 20 minutes. In this cabbage and sausage skilled recipe, you cook the sausage for 6-8 minutes and then cook the onion for 5 minutes. The cabbage cooks for 8-10 minutes and then everything is cooked together for an additional 1 minute.

Cabbage And Sausage Flavor Variations

This recipe is great as-is, but there are so many different ways to customize the flavors to your own tastes.

  • Protein: Instead of kielbasa, try a different type of sausage such as andouille sausage or Italian sausage. You can also use ground beef, ground turkey or diced chicken.
  • Vegetables: Add extra veggies such as mushrooms, bell peppers, green beans or zucchini.
  • Cheese: This recipe is great with a little cheddar or mozzarella cheese sprinkled over the top.
  • Tender: For more tender cabbage, you can add a little water or chicken broth to the pan for the last couple of minutes of cook time for the cabbage.
  • Seasonings: Amp up the flavor with a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, creole seasoning, Italian seasoning or a drizzle of red wine vinegar.
  • Spicy: Bring the heat with some crushed red pepper flakes or a little hot sauce.

Cabbage and sausage is a classic dish for good reason – it’s economical, fast and always a welcome addition to the dinner table.

In my culture we like to pair cabbage with corned beef or fish so sausage is an interesting pair, so much so that I can taste it from my laptop.

I made this yesterday and it was amazing! Between 3 people there was nothing left! The only change I made was tossing in a few pieces of seasoned country ham because I didnโ€™t want it to go to waste. I will definitely make this again and thank you!

Than k you so much for this quick, delicious recipe! I never would have thought of adding cajun seasoning to cabbage, but it complemented the meal perfectly. I walked in with the ingredients at 5:30 and we were eating a complete, yummy meal by 6:30! My husband loved it too!!
