I love incorporating tropical flavors into my every day meals, and this dragon fruit smoothie is one of my favorite ways to get a taste of the tropics. Best of all, it takes just minutes to make!

Dragon Fruit Smoothie Ingredients

Honey, yogurt, banana, frozen fruit and apple juice.

To make this recipe, you will need apple juice, frozen red dragon fruit, banana, vanilla Greek yogurt and honey. You can add optional garnishes such as fresh dragon fruit and mint sprigs to the finished drinks.

How Do You Make A Dragon Fruit Smoothie?

Place the frozen dragon fruit, apple juice, banana, Greek yogurt and honey into a blender. Blend until the drink is smooth. Divide the smoothie into two glasses. Serve as-is, or add some fresh dragon fruit and mint sprigs on top.

Tips For The Perfect Drink

  • This dragon fruit smoothie is best when served right away, as it may separate as it sits in the fridge for an extended period of time.
  • Many major grocery stores sell bags of frozen dragon fruit chunks with the rest of the frozen fruit offerings in the freezer area. You can also use smoothie packs of frozen puree. If you use the smoothie packs, you’ll need two for this recipe.
  • I recommend using red dragon fruit, as it tends to be sweetener than white dragon fruit.
  • For an extra thick smoothie, cut your banana into slices and freeze it before you make your drink.

Quick Tip

This recipe makes smoothies for two, but you can easily double or triple the ingredients for a larger crowd.

Recipe FAQs

What does a dragon fruit taste like?

Dragon fruit has a mild, slightly sweet flavor. It tastes like a cross between a kiwi and a pear.

What pairs well with dragon fruit?

Dragon fruit grows in hot, tropical climates, so it pairs well with other tropical flavors. Try pairing your dragon fruit with banana, mango or pineapple. You can also add it to tropical fruit salad, or on top of an acai bowl.

What is the best tasting dragon fruit?

There are three types of dragon fruit commonly sold in stores. The first is a white dragon fruit, which has a pink skin and white flesh. This variety has the mildest, least sweet flavor. In the middle is the red dragon fruit, which has red skin and red flesh with a moderate level of sweetness. Yellow dragon fruit, with a yellow exterior and white interior, is the sweetest and most flavorful version. That being said, it’s very difficult to find frozen yellow dragon fruit, which is why this recipe uses the red variety.

Flavor Variations

This dragon fruit smoothie is delicious as written, but you can easily customize some of the ingredients to suit your tastes.

  • Liquid: Try using coconut milk, oat milk, almond milk, coconut water, orange juice or pineapple juice instead of apple juice. The milks will give the smoothie an even creamier texture. You can also use half the amount of liquid for a thicker drink to make a smoothie bowl. It’s also fine to use maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Fruit: Swap out half of the dragon fruit for another type of tropical fruit such as papaya, pineapple, mango or kiwi. You can also use strawberries, raspberries or blueberries.
  • Add-Ins: Add some extra flavor and nutrition to your smoothie with ingredients such as protein powder, almond butter, hemp seeds, ground flax seeds, chia seeds, kale or spinach.

I always keep a bag of frozen fruit in my freezer for when the smoothie mood strikes. This dragon fruit smoothie recipe is always a big hit with both kids and adults.
