Red white and blue Jello shots are a great way to celebrate the patriotic holidays. You can even prepare this 4th of July treat without alcohol as a fun mini dessert for the kids!

Red White And Blue Jello Shots Ingredients

Ingredients including boxes of gelatin, vodka and water.

To make red white and blue Jello shots, you will need berry blue Jello, red jello, sweetened condensed milk, vodka, water, unflavored gelatin, whipped cream and patriotic sprinkles.

How Do You Make Red White And Blue Jello Shots?

First, prepare the blue Jello layer by mixing the Jello powder with boiling water in a mixing bowl until it dissolves. Add water and vodka to the gelatin, then pour the blue liquid into the bottom of each shot cup or shot glass. Let the blue layer chill until it is set. For the white layer, place water in a pan and sprinkle the unflavored gelatin packets over the top. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes so the gelatin can bloom. Place the pan on the stove, then cook to dissolve the gelatin. Remove the pan from the heat, then stir in the condensed milk. Let the mixture cool for about 10 minutes, then add a layer of white gelatin on top of the blue gelatin in each cup. Return the shots to the fridge and chill until set.

Prepare the red layer by mixing cherry or strawberry Jello with boiling water. Whisk until all the powder dissolves, then add cold water and vodka. Let the mixture cool slightly, then add the red layer on top of the white and blue layers. Chill until the shots are completely firm. When you’re ready to serve the shots, add a little whipped cream and sprinkles, then enjoy!

Tips For The Perfect Shots

  • Place all the shot cups on a rimmed baking sheet. This makes it easy to transfer them back and forth from the fridge without spilling.
  • It’s important to make sure each layer is set before you add the next layer so that the colors don’t run together.
  • You can use whipped cream or thawed whipped topping for the final garnish. Spoon a little whipped cream on top, or use a piping bag to add the whipped cream.
  • Red white and blue Jello shots will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Quick Tip

Use a measuring spoon or turkey baster to easily fill each shot glass.

Recipe FAQs

How long does it take for a layer of Jello to set?

It takes 1-2 hours for a layer of Jello to set, depending on the thickness of the layer. For these Jello shots, it should take about 1 hour for each layer to set.

How do you layer Jello without mixing it?

The key to layering Jello is to make sure each layer is completely set before you add the next one. Pour the liquid gelatin on top of the first layer and do not disturb it. It’s also a good idea to slightly cool the liquid before it goes on, that way it won’t be hot enough to melt the layer underneath.

Flavor Variations

This recipe is delicious as-is, but you can customize some of the ingredients to suit your tastes.

  • Jell-O: I prefer the color and flavor of strawberry Jello, but feel free to use another red flavor such as cherry, raspberry or even cranberry.
  • Alcohol: Try a flavored vodka such as berry vodka or vanilla vodka. You can also use tequila or coconut rum.
  • Garnish: Top your shots with a maraschino cherry for a fun finish.
  • Non-Alcoholic: Replace the vodka in the recipe with water.

Your guests will love these adorable and delicious red white and blue Jello shots. They’re definitely worth the effort to make!

  • 2 cups cold water
  • 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk

For the red layer

  • 3 ounce box red Jello
  • cups water divided use
  • ½ cup vodka

  • cups whipped cream or whipped topping
  • ½ cup red white and blue sprinkles

Instructions

For the blue layer

  • Heat one cup of water until it's boiling.
  • Pour the boiling water into a bowl containing your blue Jello powder and whisk the mixture until the powder is completely dissolved.
  • Pour in 1/2 cup cold water and whisk until combined.
  • Pour in the vodka and whisk until thoroughly blended. Divide the Jello mixture evenly among 22 two-ounce shot cups, then chill for at least one hour.

For the white layer

  • Place the cold water in a pan and sprinkle the gelatin over it. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 minutes.
  • Transfer the pan to the stove and cook on low heat for 4-5 minutes until gelatin has melted.
  • Remove the mixture from the heat, then whisk in the condensed milk.
  • Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes, then add a layer of white Jello on top of the blue Jello. You may have some white gelatin leftover, which you can pour into a bowl and chill separately for a snack!
  • Chill for at least one hour.

For the red layer

  • Heat one cup of water until it's boiling.
  • Pour the boiling water into a bowl containing your red Jello powder and whisk the mixture until the powder is completely dissolved.

For garnish

  • Pipe or dollop a tablespoon of whipped cream onto each shot. Add some red white and blue sprinkles, then serve immediately.

Notes

  1. It’s important to make sure that each layer is set before you add the next color so that the layers don’t run together.
  2. Add the whipped cream and sprinkles right before serving.
  3. I prefer the color and taste of strawberry Jello, but feel free to use a different red flavor such as cherry.
