Red Velvet Waffles Ingredients

To make this recipe, you will need all purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, salt, granulated sugar, buttermilk, eggs, butter, vanilla extract and red food coloring. For the icing, you will need cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract. You can garnish the waffles with fresh berries and mini chocolate chips.
How Do You Make Red Velvet Waffles?
Prepare the waffle batter by whisking together the dry ingredients of flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, granulated sugar and salt in a large bowl. Add the wet ingredients of buttermilk, eggs, butter and vanilla extract to the bowl. Stir until the batter is just combined. Add the food coloring and stir once more. Preheat a waffle iron, and brush it with oil or coat with cooking spray. Pour some batter into the waffle maker. Cook until the waffle is lightly browned, then repeat the process with the rest of the batter.

While the waffles are cooking, make your cream cheese icing. Use a mixer to beat butter and cream cheese together until light and fluffy. Add the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract, then beat until you have a smooth frosting. Drizzle the icing over each waffle, then add berries and chocolate chips and serve.

Tips For The Perfect Waffles
- I prefer to use gel food coloring because it provides a more vibrant color without adding any extra liquid to the batter. I typically use Americolor Super Red.
- Leftover waffles will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Store them separate from the icing, and reheat in the toaster. You can also freeze the waffles for up to 2 months.
- Different waffle makers cook at different rates. Mine typically produces crispy waffles in about 6 minutes, but just be aware cook times may vary so keep an eye on the first waffle!
- I use a disposable piping bag or a large freezer bag with the tip cut off to neatly drizzle the icing over the waffles.
