How do you make crock pot baked potatoes?

This recipe is so simple! Wash your potatoes well, then prick them with a fork. Rub a little olive oil over the potatoes, and season generously with salt and pepper. Wrap each potato in foil, then place them into the crock pot. Cover and cook until the potatoes are tender. Unwrap the potatoes, then cut them open. Add your favorite toppings and then you’ll be ready to eat!

Tips for the perfect dish

  • Choose potatoes that are similar in size so that they cook at the same rate.
  • This recipe assumes you’re using potatoes that are about 6-8 ounces each. If your potatoes are significantly larger or smaller, the cook time can vary.
  • While Russet potatoes are the most popular choice for a classic baked potato, you can also use red potatoes or Yukon Gold potatoes.
  • Leftover potatoes will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can reheat the potatoes in their foil jackets in the oven, or remove the foil and heat them in the microwave.
  • Serving a crowd? You can double the recipe, just make sure you have a large enough crock pot so that the potatoes fit in with plenty of room for the hot air to circulate.

Recipe FAQs

Can you cook potatoes from raw in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can cook all different types of raw potatoes in a slow cooker. You will just want to watch the cook time carefully to make sure the finished potatoes are not too hard or overly soft.

How long does it take for potatoes to soften in a crock pot?

A medium sized potato will cook for 4 hours on high heat, or 8 hours on low heat. If your potatoes are smaller, in the 4-6 ounce range, it will take 3 hours on high or 6 hours on low. If the potatoes are over 8 ounces each, you’ll want to cook them for 5 hours on high or 9 hours on low.

Toppings for slow cooker baked potatoes

There are so many different ways to top your potatoes!

  • Protein: Turn your potato into a main course by adding some meat to the mix! Some good options include bacon, ham, Italian sausage, shredded BBQ pork or chicken, or even ground beef.
  • Cheese: Add some shredded cheese to add extra flavor to your spuds. My favorites are cheddar, colby jack, mozzarella and pepper jack.
  • Veggies: Top your potatoes with cooked broccoli, sauteed mushrooms, diced fresh tomatoes, sliced green onions or grilled bell peppers.
  • Sauces: Get saucy with some nacho cheese sauce, sour cream, salsa, herb butter, guacamole or even BBQ sauce.
  • Chili: Use canned chili or homemade chili such as beef chili or vegetarian chili to top your tater.

These crock pot baked potatoes are part of our regular dinner rotation because they’re simple but satisfying, and a total hit with both kids and adults!
