Margaritas are always delicious, but they’re even better when you add some fresh fruit to the mix! This blackberry margarita features juicy berries, and is loaded with refreshing flavor.

Blackberry Margarita Ingredients

Ingredients including tequila, blackberries, sugar, salt and triple sec.

To make this recipe, you will need fresh blackberries, lime juice, agave syrup, tequila blanco (silver tequila), triple sec (such as Cointreau), salt and sugar. You can garnish the drink with fresh blackberries, mint and lime slices.

How Do You Make A Blackberry Margarita?

Place the salt and sugar on a small plate, then stir to combine. Dip the rim of a glass in water, then place the rim onto the plate of salt and sugar. Twist the cup to coat the rim all the way around, then place the glass upright. Add the blackberries and agave syrup to a cocktail shaker, then use a muddler to crush the berries. Place ice in the shaker, along with the tequila, triple sec and lime juice. Seal the shaker, then shake to combine. Add ice to the serving glass, then strain the drink into the glass. Serve immediately, with garnishes of your choice like berries and limes.

Tips For The Perfect Drink

  • Fresh berries work best in this drink. You can use frozen berries in a pinch, just make sure that they’re thawed first. Fresh berries tend to be sweeter than frozen, so you may need to add more agave if you go with frozen.
  • If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can use a mason jar instead, then pour the drink through a sieve into the glass.
  • This recipe makes one drink. You can easily make blackberry margaritas for a crowd by changing the number of servings in the recipe card.
  • Serve your blackberry margarita with other Mexican favorites such as shrimp tacos with mango salsa and black beans and rice.
  • Pouring this drink through the built-in strainer in a cocktail shaker will still leave some seeds in the drink. For a completely smooth drink, pour the drink through a fine mesh sieve into your glass.

Quick Tip

Use fresh lime juice for the best results.

Recipe FAQs

Is Cointreau or triple sec better in a margarita?

Cointreau is a type of triple sec. It tends to have a fresh, clean flavor with plenty of orange essence. It is my preferred choice for margarita making.

Do you shake or stir a margarita?

It is best to shake a margarita. This method thoroughly blends the ingredients, and for this blackberry margarita, the shaker will strain most of the berry seeds out of the drink when you pour it into the glass.

Flavor Variations

This recipe is fabulous as-is, but it’s easy to customize the flavors to your tastes.

  • Alcohol: You can use a different type of tequila such as reposado. Grand Marnier is also a great substitute for triple sec.
  • Fruit: Swap out the blackberries for a different type of fresh berries such as strawberries or raspberries. Fresh cherries are also a great choice.

Blackberry margaritas are a must-have for any summer gathering!
