These Halloween Jello shots are layers of black cherry Jello and orange Jello, mixed with vodka and served with a topping of whipped cream and sprinkles. The perfect addition to your next Halloween party!
You can never go wrong with traditional Jello shots, but I like to go all out for Halloween with these spooky orange and black gelatin shots. They’re always a huge hit, and the perfect boozy Halloween treat!
Halloween is often about the kids and their costumes and trick or treating, but who says the adults can’t have a little fun too? These layered Halloween Jell-O shots are almost too pretty to eat, and are great for celebrating the holiday.
Halloween Jello Shots Ingredients
To make this recipe, you will need orange Jello, black cherry Jello, black food coloring, Cherry Coke, vodka, water, whipped cream or whipped topping and Halloween sprinkles.
How Do You Make Halloween Jello Shots?
Start by preparing the black layer. Mix boiling Cherry coke soda and the black cherry Jello powder together in a bowl until the powder dissolves. Whisk in the black food coloring. Add some cold Cherry Coke, and then the vodka. Fill each of your shot cups halfway with the dark Jello mixture then refrigerate until mostly set. Pour boiling water and orange Jello in a mixing bowl, and stir to dissolve the gelatin. Add cold water and vodka, then pour the orange layer on top of the set black layer. Chill until the shots are completely firm. When you’re ready to serve the shots, add a little whipped cream and Halloween sprinkles.
Tips For The Perfect Shots
- The combination of black cherry gelatin and the soda makes for a dark layer of Jello that is almost black in color. I add a few drops of black food coloring for a pure black color, but you can skip the food coloring if you don’t have it on hand.
- Add the whipped cream and sprinkles to the Halloween Jello shots just before serving for the best results.
- You can use whipped cream from an aerosal can, freshly whipped heavy cream or frozen whipped topping that has been thawed.
- If you don’t want to use shot glasses or plastic shot containers, you can pour your Jello into a 9 inch square pan lined with plastic wrap, and then cut it into cubes to serve.
- I use 2 ounce disposable plastic shot cups which are available online and at large stores like Target.
- Use a syringe or baster to easily fill your cups.
Quick Tip
Place all your shot cups on a rimmed baking sheet before you fill them. This makes it easy to carry them to the refrigerator without multiple trips or spilling.
Recipe FAQs
Vodka is the most popular alcohol for Jello shots, but you can use other liquors with a such as tequila or rum.
I recommend using 1/2 cup vodka for each 3 ounce box of Jello for the best results.

Flavor Variations
This recipe is delicious as it is, but you can use it as a guideline to make your own creation.
- Gelatin: Orange and black are traditional Halloween colors, but you could also do layers of orange with green lime Jello or orange with purple grape Jello. You could also do orange and yellow to resemble candy corn. If you change the flavor of the bottom layer, use water instead of Dr. Pepper.
- Toppings: Top the shots with candy corn, gummy worms, candy eyeballs, candy knives, or popping boba pearls.
- Alcohol: Swap out the vodka for rum, tequila, or use a flavored liqueur like triple sec.
These Halloween Jello shots are a must-have for the adults to celebrate this fun holiday!

- 1 1/2 cups water divided use

Instructions
For the black layer
- Heat one cup of Cherry Coke on the stove until it's boiling. Chill the remaining 1/2 of soda in the fridge.
- Pour the boiling soda into a medium bowl containing the black cherry gelatin and whisk the mixture until the powder is completely dissolved. Stir in the black food coloring if using.
- Pour in the 1/2 cup of cold Coke and whisk to combine.
- Add the vodka and whisk until thoroughly blended.
- Fill 20 two-ounce shot glasses or plastic cups halfway with the black Jello. Chill for at least one hour.
For the orange layer
- Place the orange Jello powder in a medium bowl. Boil one cup of the water on the stove, then pour the boiling water on top of the Jello.
- Whisk until the powder dissolves.
- Add 1/2 cup of cold water to the gelatin mixture and whisk again.
- Stir in the vodka and whisk once more.
- Pour the orange Jello on top of the black Jello layer in the shot cups.
- Chill for at least 1 1/2 hours or until shots are firm.
- When you're ready to serve the shots, top them with some whipped cream and sprinkles, then serve immediately.
Notes
- Place your shot glasses or plastic cups on a sheet pan before placing the gelatin mixture in them. This makes it easy to carry the pan with all the Jello shots in the refrigerator.
- To pour the Jello mixture evenly into the cups, try using a turkey baster to suction the liquid and squirt it in the containers. You can also use a measuring spoon.
