Chicken riggies pasta with seared chicken, rigatoni and peppers in a creamy tomato sauce.

I was at a local restaurant the other day and they had a dish on the menu that was called chicken riggies. Curiosity got the best of me and I ordered it, what a great decision that was! I liked it so much that I decided to recreate the recipe at home.

What is chicken riggies?

Chicken riggies is basically a spicy chicken rigatoni pasta that’s very popular in the state of New York. This dish is full of sauteed chicken, onions and peppers which are served over pasta that’s been tossed in a creamy tomato sauce.

How do you make chicken riggies?

For this chicken riggies dish, you need diced chicken, both hot and sweet peppers, and onions. For sweet peppers, I use red bell peppers, although yellow or orange will also work just fine. For the hot peppers, I use hot cherry peppers which come jars and are often sold in the pickle and olive area.

The cherry peppers really elevate this dish from your typical pasta with peppers, so make sure to include them! I put the pasta on the stove to boil and while it’s cooking, I saute my chicken, peppers and onions until they’re golden brown and tender.

After the chicken and peppers are done, it’s time to put together the sauce. I always use a jarred sauce to save time, but not all jarred sauces are created equal! I stumbled upon the new Classico Riserva Pasta Sauce and it’s now my go-to sauce. It tastes homemade because it’s slow simmered to perfection, with vine ripened tomatoes, herbs and spices, extra virgin olive oil and a bit of sea salt. I also love that the sauces are made with no artificial ingredients or added sugar.

Classico Riserva sauces come in 5 different flavors, in this dish I used the Roasted Garlic flavor to amp up the flavor of the chicken riggies. Opening a jar of great pasta sauce is almost like opening a nice bottle of wine – you want the good stuff!

The sauce for the chicken riggies is a whole bottle of Classic Riserva Pasta Sauce along with a bit of cream. The sauce gets tossed with the pasta and chicken mixture to create an exceptional dinner without a ton of effort! You can add a little parsley like I did here, and be sure to serve your pasta with some freshly grated parmesan.

Feeding a crowd? This recipe can easily be doubled to feed a house full of people. Just add a side salad and perhaps some garlic bread and you’ll have an Italian feast!

Once you try this chicken riggies pasta, you’ll find yourself making it on a regular basis. That combination of golden brown chicken with assorted peppers just can’t be beat. This is a must-make recipe!

Made this tonight and it was awesome! We used to live in Syracuse and loved going out for chicken riggies. Now that we’re in Ohio, I’m glad to have a way to make it at home. I might try blending the cherry peppers into the sauce next time with my stick blender for a more noticeable kick. Great recipe! Thanks!

  2. This looks wonderful. I can’t wait to try the recipe. I think a chicken Parmesan would be good with the sauce too.

  3. I would use the Classico Riserva Arrabbiata Sauce to make Chicken Parmesan Sandwiches and Meatball Subs for my wife and two boys.

I would make pizza. My kids loves making homemade pizza. We make it family fun night. My husband at times brings home fresh dough from his store he works at. I never tried this sauce brand. Love to try it

We make a ton of casseroles, usually as a way to clear out the cupboards and freezer of things that have been up there too long. You can make them countless ways, and when you throw cheese on top, the kids will not complain about it. We primarily use condensed soups in these casseroles, but these sauces, with the variety of flavors they come in, would be a great substitute.

  8. This is the perfect family meal Sara — I love all the flavors you’ve packed into it, and I love Classico, their flavor is the freshest!

  9. Each February, we host a stockdog trial on our farm in central Florida. Dog handlers from all over the U.S. and Canada start rolling in on Thursday before the sheep herding competition begins on Friday morning (think Babe the Pig). The road weary are always invited up to the house to say “hi” and have a bite to eat so I’m always on the lookout for meals that are easy to make for a crowd. This Chicken Reggies recipe sounds absolutely delicious and certainly satisfies the “easy to make for a crowd” requirement! Thanks, Sara! It’s nice to know in June what I’ll be serving for the dog trial in February!!

  10. i’ve never tried this version of their spicy sauce – but will look for it now. I love a little zing in my tomato “gravy” Pasta, chicken and sauce – the perfect dinner, hot or cold!

  13. Looks really, really delicious! Love the flavour combinations and the bit of spicy 🙂
