These sauteed mushrooms are sliced button mushrooms cooked in butter, garlic and herbs until caramelized and tender. An easy side dish that takes about 15 minutes to make!

In my house mushroom recipes are always a hit. Some of our favorites include Instant Pot chicken with mushrooms, beef tips with mushroom gravy, sausage stuffed mushrooms and mushroom pork chops. These simple sauteed mushrooms pair perfectly with almost any protein and they taste like something you’d get a restaurant.

Whenever I go out to eat at a steakhouse, I have to order the sauteed mushrooms. They’re so buttery and delicious and full of savory flavor. Now you can make your own steakhouse style mushrooms at home with very little effort. You’ll be surprised at how easy they are to make! This is one of my all time favorite side dish recipes.

Sauteed Mushrooms Ingredients

Bowls of ingredients including mushrooms, butter, garlic and seasonings.

This recipe consists of mushrooms, butter, garlic, salt, black pepper and fresh parsley.

How Do You Make Sauteed Mushrooms?

The first step is to choose your mushroom variety. I typically use the standard white button mushrooms, but you can use other varieties such as cremini mushrooms (sometimes called baby bella mushrooms), chanterelle, portobello mushrooms or shiitake. Saute the mushrooms with butter, salt and pepper until tender, then stir in fresh garlic. Add a sprinkle of parsley and you’ll be ready to eat!

Step by step shots showing how to saute mushrooms.

Tips For The Perfect Dish

  • I cut my mushrooms into thick slices because I find them easier to eat that way, but you can leave your mushrooms whole if you prefer. Just be sure to adjust the cooking time accordingly.
  • The mushrooms will release a lot of liquid as they cook. If you wait patiently, that liquid will evaporate off and when that happens, the mushrooms will get that great caramelized exterior.
  • I typically add a sprinkling of fresh parsley to my mushrooms, but other great options are dill, chives or fresh thyme leaves.
  • To make this recipe vegan, use 3 tablespoons of olive oil instead of the butter.

Quick Tip

I add the garlic towards the end of the cooking time so that it doesn’t burn.

Recipe FAQs

How do you clean mushrooms?

The best way to clean mushrooms is to use a damp paper towel to gently rub dirt from each mushroom. You can also rinse your mushrooms in a colander, but be sure to rinse them briefly; do not soak them in water.

Are mushrooms healthy?

Mushrooms are very healthy and contain many nutrients including Vitamin B, copper, potassium and Vitamin D. Mushrooms are low in calories, high in fiber and low in carbohydrates. While this recipe isn’t the healthiest choice because of the butter, you can cut the calories a bit by using half the amount of butter.

How long should you saute mushrooms for?

You should saute mushrooms for 7 minutes, or as long as it takes for them to get tender and golden brown.

  • Cheese: Stir in 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese before serving.
  • Onions: Add 1 thinly sliced onion when you put the mushrooms in the pan to cook.
  • Flavorings: Feel free to add a touch of soy sauce, lemon juice or Worcestershire sauce.

How To Serve Sauteed Mushrooms

I typically serve sauteed mushrooms as a side dish, but there are so many different ways to use them!

No matter how you serve your mushrooms, they’re sure to be a huge hit! I make these sauteed mushrooms at least once a week and there are never any leftovers.

This is the second time I’ve made these mushrooms and the second time it received rave reviews. So yummy! Kids and adults LOVED these mushrooms. The second time I went halfsies on the garlic since 6 of the 11 dinner guests were tweens. The mushrooms were still amazing! I paired them with rib eye roast, small potatoes, and spinach salad. So yummy! Going to try making a small batch next time with vegan butter to see if I can recreate the goodness. Thank you!

I made this the first time using white button mushrooms as I had them already. I use a bit more Cavenders as we love the taste of the spices it contains. Having only 2 pitas on hand we put the remainder on Beefsteak Rye which was very good. The following times I have made this I used Portabella and WOW do they ever take this over the top. It is requested by the men when it is my husbands turn for poker night” at our home. I am soon to host my entire family for a gathering for my father and plan to serve these pitas with the meat already prepared and kept warm. I’ll just let guests fill their own pita. Thank you for sharing a fantastic recipe!!!!!
