I have a confession to make. I’ve been holding out on you guys. These Mexican fruit cups have been my summer obsession for about a month now, and it’s taken me way too long to share them with you! You’re probably wondering what the big deal is – I mean, it’s just fruit in a cup right? It’s a cup full of tropical fruits with a sweet and spicy twist, and I have been making a variation of these fruit cups almost every day since I discovered them. Serve your fruit cups alongside other Mexican favorites such as chile colorado, cilantro lime shrimp or a hearty taco bake.

How Do You Make Mexican Fruit Cups?

Gather your fruit and jicama. Peel all the ingredients, then cut them into similar sized spears. Place one of each type of fruit and vegetable into each cup. Add a lime wedge to each cup and sprinkle with chili lime seasoning. Serve and enjoy! Don’t forget to squeeze that lime juice over the top before you eat!

Tips For The Perfect Dish

  • Look for firm but ripe mangoes and papayas. If the fruits are too soft, you won’t be able to cut them into spears.
  • I typically use Mexican papaya, but Hawaiian papaya will also work well!
  • You can also choose to cut your fruit and jicama into cubes if you prefer, and serve it in a bowl to make a Mexican fruit salad.
  • Chili lime seasoning can be found at most grocery stores in the spice aisle. The most popular brand is Tajin, but I also like the Trader Joe’s version. It typically contains salt, chili powder and lime.

Quick Tip

Mexican fruit cups will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Simply cover each cup tightly with plastic wrap, and add the chili lime seasoning right before serving.

Recipe FAQs

What is fruit in a cup called?

Why do you put tajin on fruit?

The salt, chili and citrus in tajin really accentuate the flavors of the fruit, and the combination of sweet and savory makes the fruit taste even better!

Is fruit with tajin healthy?

Fruit with tajin is a great addition to any healthy diet. Fruit is low in calories and very high in nutrients. Tajin has a negligible amount of calories and adds a lot of flavor without making the dish less healthy.

Flavor Variations

While this dish is great as-is, you can change the ingredients to customize the flavors to your tastes.

  • Fruit: Feel free to add other fruits to your cups. Some great options include oranges, cantaloupe, honeydew or even fresh coconut.
  • Sauce: It is very common to add sweet and savory chamoy sauce to fruit cups. Chamoy can be found in the ethnic foods aisle of most grocery stores. Another option is to add a drizzle of honey.
  • Spice: Prefer a little more heat? Try adding some minced jalapeno in with the fruit.
  • Herbs: You can garnish your fruit with a little chopped cilantro or mint.
